I have had the pleasure of managing three Fast Track apprentices within my team and I have also worked with a number of other apprentices across the department. It has been such a developmental and rewarding experience for me to see early talent join the Civil Service and truly blossom. The Fast Track programme is a genuine alternative to university, however it is also a great way to change careers and learn new skills.
I enjoy adapting and tailoring my approach to develop my team. There is nothing better than seeing someone grow and become more confident in their ability. I love working with Fast Track apprentices, whether they have changed career or have recently left school, they are always engaged and willing to get involved in lots of different projects.
One of my former Fast Track apprentices has recently graduated from the programme and secured a promotion. They have achieved this through hard work and taking on responsibility outside of their comfort zone. Although lacking in confidence around managing others, they really pushed themselves to try something new and ended up excelling at managing a large team of people!
Fast Track roles vary between profession and department, the range of roles have included; supporting the Fast Stream graduate programme, developing software in HMRC, project management within the Ministry of Defence and working closely with Directors in the Cabinet Office. The list really does go on! The common theme across all schemes and departments is that the Fast Track supports apprentices in developing their skills, balancing on the job learning with classroom based training and helping to kick start their career.
My team and I have learnt a lot from our Fast Track apprentices and they really have helped us to evolve the Fast Track recruitment service. Through their commitment to making a difference and a fresh perspective on how we could do things, they have made a real impact. As well as being a rewarding experience for me as a line manager, the Fast Track programme is a great opportunity to earn, learn and succeed!
