“What exactly is commercial!?” I hear you ask.
A common question that I’m happy to answer. Commercial in government is the procuring (or buying) of goods and services for the government.
Some of our apprentices at the moment sit in some of the biggest projects in the world. No organisation in the UK spends more than government on goods and services.
Now is a great time to join the commercial profession in government. Commercial is one of government’s top 3 priorities. The Chief Executive of the Civil Service, John Manzoni recently wrote:
“So why is commercial so important? The answer is simple. Every year, government spends billions of pounds on contracts to provide a wide range of public services. So, securing the best deals for government is essential, not only to deliver value for money to the taxpayer, but also to drive innovation in the wider economy.”
One aspect of making this commercial function the best in the UK is recruiting, retaining and developing the best people. The Commercial Fast Track fits into the development focus.
