Why I joined the Fast Track: Aliane Umuhoza

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Fast Track Apprenticeships

I help with the on-boarding of the fast streamers for the Fast Stream scheme. They’re on a four year programme and basically I help source the secondments and the postings that they go on during their development.

I joined the Fast Track scheme because there are just so many opportunities to grow as a person, especially because in the Civil Service there are so many departments that you can go into, and just develop your professional self and take your career into different fields.

The scheme also gives school leavers like myself the opportunity to get the skills and experience I couldn't have gained if I were to go to university. The best thing I’ve done on the scheme so far is deliver a number of presentations to senior civil servants, which was quite daunting at first, but it gives you that push to really become a confident, competent professional. I’ve also been able to go to careers events and speak to a number of peers and students that have left school.

Being a civil servant enables me to kind of help the public as well, which really gives that extra importance to my job because I know the skills that I’m using in my work, and the work I’m delivering will benefit the wider public.

I’d recommend the Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme because it’s a really good opportunity to get into a working environment and also the experience, because top employers look for experience within young people as well, so that’s really important. And you can get this experience and these skills well in advance of graduates, so I’d really recommend this. It’s really good.
